Event Details

You know that urge you get when you want to share something amazing that you’ve discovered? Well, that’s exactly what happened to us when we were introduced to Wonder Ponder, a collection of illustrated books that introduce children to some of those big human questions. So, we’re bringing María Asuero, a dear friend of ours, to run a philosophy workshop for children based on the third volume in their series; Whatever You Want, an invitation to wonder and ponder about freedom for small, medium and large people.

Some of the questions that will come up in the workshop:

Is being free doing whatever we want?
Can we all do whatever we want at the same time?
What is the difference between always having to do what you are told and being a slave?
Are you anyone or anything’s slave?
Would being able to fly make you freer?
Is it possible to be happy without being free?
What is it to be free?
And what do we want to be free for?

Half-way between a book and a game, Whatever You Want comes in a box and invites readers to think about freedom in a way that is both serious and seriously fun.

Wonder Ponder’s Visual Philosophy for Children series introduces readers aged eight and over to philosophy’s big questions playfully and appealingly. Engaging scenes and intriguing questions prompt reflection and discussion encouraging children to develop their own thoughts and arguments and to build a visual and conceptual map of the issue addressed in each box. Wonder Ponder boxes are designed to look at, read and think about by themselves or with others, in educational, play or family settings. Unfortunately these boxes aren’t distributed in the USA, but you can always get yours on their website.

María Asuero was born in Spain 36 years ago. She holds two Masters, one in Children’s Literature and the other one in Research in Didactics of Language and Literature, both from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She has taught in several countries, but she currently teaches Kindergarten in Houston. She plays viola, loves books and Mexican food, but what she likes the most is being with her daughter.
