Tucson, Arizona, interdisciplinary artist Karima Walker walks a line between two worlds. Aside from her long resume of collaborative work with artists in the diverse fields of dance, sculpture, film, photography, and creative non-fiction, Walker has long nurtured a duality within her work as a musician, developing her own sonic language as a sound designer in tandem with her craft as a singer/songwriter. Her record Waking the Dreaming Body was released in 2021 to critical acclaim. Uncut called it “alluringly idiosyncratic,” MOJO heralded it as “both welcome comfort and a surprising joy,” and Various Small Flames called it “sublime.” Joyzine described it as “an opulent reverie that folds dreams into reality and compels us to slow down and be in the moment.”

Alex Dupree got his musical start in Austin, Texas, and his voice still has some Heartworn Highways-era color to it. Despite a deep love for country music, Dupree’s songs never quite settled in that category, absorbing additional influences from the likes of Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Bjork, and John Cale. Thieves is his most recent record and is the story of starting over. It’s a sturdy songwriter’s album with heady, heavy folk and country flourishes. Bill Callahan meets Willie Nelson. Or Harry Smith meets Barry Hannah. It’s about coming to terms with the uncanny patterns of your life, the strange repetitions you can’t escape.
