29febthuThe Point // Atlas Maior: Palindrome + Stefan Gonzalez7:00 pm - 9:30 pm Event Type :Backyard Concert

Event Details

A leap year celebration concert with two genre-bending bands from Austin that take inspiration from Ethio-Jazz, Arabic Magam, blues, some Avant-Garde, and beyond. The Point is a duo that mixes influences from West Africa, Peru, Houston, Thailand, and Italian Cinema with their own Capitol City roots. Atlas Maior creates original music that combines elements of Progressive Jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Indian music traditions; on this occasion, they’ll be joined by Dallas’ own Stefan Gonzalez to add a whole another cornucopia of flavors into the melting pot.

Jack Montesinos and Joe Roddy cover instruments like the guitar, upright bass, piano, organ, trumpet, electronic production, and beat making. Since middle school, the two have had a musical chemistry stemming from their shared love for Texas blues, Pacific jazz, and chopped and screwed Hip-Hop. They have backed up and shared the stage with artists such as Los Lobos, Jimmie Vaughan, Lil Keke, Cactus Lee, The Mellows, Ben Buck, and Joe’s father Ted Roddy, among many others. The two have individually recorded for artists including Black Pumas and Charley Crockett as of 2023, and additionally produce music along with French drummer Nico Leophonte.

Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone, flutes) and Josh Peters (oud, lavta), create a unique sound that balances intimate moments of sincerity with powerful melodies and incendiary rhythmic passages. The group writes original melodies exploring maqamat (Middle Eastern modal system) and harmonic progressions found in American jazz. Atlas Maior composes with a variety of rhythms & instrumentation including Indian tablas, kanjira, & Chinese hulusi.

Stefan is a drummer, percussionist, and vocalist from Dallas, TX. They are most known for his work with his family bands Yells at Eels (with brother Aaron Gonzalez and father Dennis Gonzalez) and Akkolyte (with brother Aaron). Stefan also performs regularly with Ingebrigt Haker Flaten’s super group The Young Mothers featuring Texas-based musicians Jonathan Horne, Jawwaad Taylor, Jason Jackson, and Amsterdam-based drummer Frank Rosaly.
