Deep Vellum Publishing an independent translation publishing house hosts a discussion with Shelby Vincent, translator of Carmen Boullosa’s Heavens on Earth and managing editor for Translation Review. Vincent will join arts writer Lauren Smart in a conversation about the gender politics in language and the challenges of working with words that are not your own.
Shelby Vincent’s translation of Carmen Boullosa’s Cielos de la Tierra (Heavens on Earth) is forthcoming from Deep Vellum Press and she is currently translating another of Boullosa’s novels titled La virgen y el violín (The Virgin and The Violin), which is loosely based on the female Renaissance artist Sofonisba Anguissola.
Lauren Smart is an arts writer and educator based in Dallas. Her work as a writer and critic has appeared in Dallas Morning News, Patron magazine, Arts + Culture Texas, CultureMap Dallas, Where Traveler, American Theatre magazine, among others. She recently worked as the arts and culture editor for the Dallas Observer. She is an adjunct journalism professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she teaches arts writing and criticism.
