“Ten Spooky Tens: a night of short plays” Join Flexible Grey Theatre Company for a night of ten hilarious and sometimes spooky plays this Halloween performed by an ensemble of local actors. Grab a drink from the bar and join us in Arts Mission Oak Cliff for a scary good time! Show begins at 7:30pm, approximately PG-13 rating. Event is open to the public and general admission. We will be taking donations but it is not required for entry!

We haven’t hosted Louisiana music in a while, so we are thrilled Dusky Waters’ first date in their Texas tour will take place in our backyard. Join us for an evening of New Orleans New Americana!
Dusky Waters is a project founded by singer-songwriter Jennifer Jeffers. Dusky Waters enchants listeners with intricate layers of melodies and stories told through soulful lyricism. Dusky represents the most magical time of day and Waters describes the Mississippi from which she draws strength and inspiration. She grew up on the traditions of gospel and folk music in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her childhood interest in piano blossomed into a close relationship with a guitar and eventually a love affair with a banjo. In her early twenties, she moved to the delta region of North Louisiana and began writing songs influenced by its rural beauty and the struggles of being young and restless in a small town.
Living in the delta, Dusky became a part of the duet Silo, where she honed her songwriting skills and the honey harmonies for which she is known. Dusky toured with Silo across the Southeast, earning a following from Folk and Americana fans across Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. Silo’s EP, Tall Tales was met with acclaim by local music critics in Baton Rouge, Jackson, Mississippi, and Jacksonville, Florida.
Dusky’s songwriting is honest and vulnerable to its core. She writes of love and love lost, of the draw of the South, and of the unending quest to find one’s truest self. She draws inspiration from musical powerhouses Elizabeth Cotten, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Nina Simone, and the Avett Brothers.
Dusky keeps her sound fresh with a mix of instruments, non-traditional melodies, and experimental harmonies at live shows. After moving to New Orleans In May of 2015, Dusky now performs with the very talented musicians Analiese De Saw (viola), Conner McCready (percussion), Dylan James (upright bass), and Tommy Henson (piano/organ). The band recently recorded its first full-length studio album, Pass it On (release date: June 9, 2023) at Annunciation/Platinum Cutz Studios in New Orleans with recording engineer Derek DeBlieux. The band is extremely grateful to the Threadhead Cultural Foundation for grant funding and support with this project.

Multidisciplinary artist, Tex Patrello, will be opening this special evening.
STARFRUIT
An ensemble/entity formed in 2016 by frontperson/composer/multi-instrumentalist Ava W Boehme based in Dallas, Texas. The ensemble fluctuates in size and sound, currently performing as a 6-piece group, though occasionally performing with as many as 10 members, delivering high energy, transcendent performances. In a time when many artists minimize their lineups, there’s a communal power in experiencing several people playing together as an orchestrated unit.
From the project’s beginnings, Boehme pushed for Starfruit’s music to be understood as pop music, but has begun to loosen her grip on the categorization conundrum and make the music she wants to make regardless of how it may be perceived. Dallas-based cultural publication, Central Track called Starfruit “one of Dallas’s most adventurous pop groups.”
In the wake of the cancellation of Starfruit’s first national tour in support of Wild West Combat in Spring of 2020, Boehme used her reserves of energy to write and orchestrate Starfruit’s sophomore LP, the title of which has only been shared in person at recent shows. Starfruit released the first single from the album, “Fire Fighter (Hold Me Tighter)” in March 2023, christened by a legendary DIY show on the rooftop of Deep Vellum Books in Dallas. They will celebrate the release of the album’s second single, “A Tall Tree” in the backyard of the Wild Detectives on a warm June evening at the end of Spring.
TEX PATRELLO
Composer, pianist, vocalist, and actor based in Dallas, TX. She gained a slow rise of recognition for her EP Yellow Curse, which was quietly released on Bandcamp In 2017 and then later reissued in 2020 via Terrible Records and View No Country. Yellow Curse is praised for its bedroom-produced sound and baroque elements, most notably exemplified in its opening track “Sour Apple March”. Since the release of Yellow Curse, Tex has played sporadic shows, stirring anticipation for an album release, and recently appeared onstage as Ophelia in Shakespeare Dallas’ 2022 production of Hamlet.

About the book
In Rivermouth, Oliva focuses on the physical spaces that make up different phases of immigration and looks at how language and opportunity move through each of them; from the river as the waterway that separates the US and Mexico, to the table as the place over which Oliva prepares asylum seekers for their Credible Fear Interviews, and finally, to the wall as the behemoth imposition that runs along America’s southernmost border.
With lush prose and perceptive insight, Oliva encourages readers to approach the painful questions that this crisis poses with equal parts critique and compassion. By which metrics are we measuring who “deserves” American citizenship? What is the point of humanitarian systems that distribute aid conditionally? What do we owe to our most disenfranchised?
About the author
Alejandra Oliva is an essayist, translator, immigrant justice advocate, and embroiderer. She is a recipient of the 2022 Creative Nonfiction Whiting Grant. Her writing has been included in Best American Travel Writing 2020, was nominated for a Pushcart prize, and was honored with an Aspen Summer Words Emerging Writers Fellowship. She was the Franke Fellow at the Yale Whitney Humanities Center in 2022.
