Event Details

Welcome back to the Six Foot Love series at The Wild Detectives. A series of live outdoor performances with numbered seats and limited capacity.

Tickets: $12/person

Starfruit will be playing 2 full sets to celebrate the ensemble’s 5 year anniversary.

The first set will consist of ballads, including their EP, Tender Tape performed for the first time in near entirety. The second will be a loud full band set with songs spanning their catalogue from their first 7” through their second full length album which they are currently making.

Starfruit was formed in 2016 by front-person/composer/multi-instrumentalist Ava W Boehme (they/she.) Starfruit’s aesthetic(s) harness elaborate arrangements with moments of frenzied improvisation contained within elegantly organized orchestrations, often integrating their songs with jubilant homemade videos. The ensemble fluctuates in size and sound, currently performing as a 5-6 piece group, but occasionally performing with as many as 10 members, delivering high energy performances with an air of optimism and transcendence.

Since their formation, they have established a bright presence in the North Texas music community and have shared the stage with many internationally renowned acts, including The B-52’s, Xiu Xiu, Palehound, and The Motels.

Dallas art and culture publication Central Track describe Starfruit as an “ebullient experimental-pop band,” and praised their debut album as “powerful, self-affirming…” with, “a tone of empowerment in Boehme’s performance.” Central Track has nominated Starfruit for both “Best Pop Rock Act” and “Best Experimental Act” in their annual Music Honors.

After self-releasing their debut 7” EP in 2017, Starfruit released their debut full length, Wild West Combat, in January of 2020 via Dreamy Life Records. “The lyrics of Wild West Combat deal with my experience of transitioning as a nonbinary trans person living in Texas. Finding my identity, birthing myself, and navigating a Wild West where emotional and physical safety felt scarce,” explains Boehme. In March of 2021, Starfruit released Tender Tape, a collection of love ballads accompanying Wild West Combat’s bombastic cacophony with a soft refuge. “I’ve been enamored with the concept of music that loves you. Not just love songs, but music that commits the act of loving the listener,” says Boehme in regards to Tender Tape.

After the group’s plans for their first national tour in the Spring of 2020 were cut short, they turned their focus to composing, rehearsing, and recording music that will become Starfruit’s second full length album.

Join us outdoors on a cool October evening for Starfruit’s last show of the year. Tickets are on sale now and capacity will be limited to 50 people, so reserve your place while it lasts.
