MATTIE is a Dallas experimental vocalist with a “cybernetic vision”. Her single Human Thing was released last March on Los Angeles label Leaving Records, now her ep Jupiter’s Purse is landing into the world. Her concert in our backyard will be an expanded experience with performances of two of her closer collaborators: Black Taffy and Tramaine Townsend.
MATTIE is a mirror. She is an oracle of the SOL, a watchman over the keys to liberation that we may sometimes forget that we possess . In performances, she guides her audience into a visual and sonic world of duality. By using introspective visuals, lyrical self-inquiry, solful melodics, experimental instrumentation, movement, meditation, and performance art. Within these modalities they are able to bring everyone who witnesses into a remembrance of who we all are before being in the physical, human world.
Her sound? Experimental SOL
Her destination? Wholeness.
Dallas Observer Music Award Nominee, she began singing melodies at age four, developing her own concepts of notation and structure. In church she learned the basis of conventional gospel music. MATTIE used this foundation to land touring and recording gigs with Israel Houghton and New Breed, The Black and Blue, and Tha Mystics. With a love for all cultures and religions, MATTIE has adapted several different styles of music to create a sound that is uniquely hers.
Black Taffy (Donovan Jones) is a Dallas-based composer and performer whose current focus lies in pairing ambient music with large bass and percussion. The first born son of Pentecostal music ministers, Donovan grew up witnessing the power music has to induce trance and encourage spiritual awakening. Eventually drawing parallels between christianity, voodoo, and the occult, he left the former to immerse himself in the latter. Sometimes performing with only Vibraphone and cassette decks, he frequently employs the use of tape loops and other antiquated mediums to create pillowy worlds of wow and flutter.
Whether he is photographing talent such as Mr Leon Bridges or creating abstract, avant-garde, sometimes bizarre imagery, Mr Tramaine Townsend’s idiosyncratic aesthetic shines through. Bold colour saturation and unusual perspectives lend his work a ponderous, otherworldly vibe even though his subjects are very much situated in the here and now.
