About Mudlark
A dazzling dystopian novel about the fall of a troubled rockstar, her long-lost solo album, and her daughter’s epic search for redemption in the ruins of New York City.
Set between the chaos of a final performance at Burning Man and the flooded ruins of a future Manhattan, Mudlark follows a mother and daughter separated by disaster, memory, and time. As Neko searches for traces of her missing mother through a fractured New York shaped by scarcity and survival, the novel moves through questions of art, inheritance, and what remains after collapse. Blending literary fiction, speculative fiction, and music culture, Mudlark traces the persistence of human connection in a damaged world.

An end-of-the-world love story, an epic full of pathos and humor, asking what can be saved of our planet
Two women meet on a beach of artificial sand. One was raised in a pod in the ocean and the other may or may not be a robot. Their love—or any love—seems so unlikely. Earth is severely depopulated. Some people have given up, gone off to Mars. Others pursue eternal life as digital code. And yet others, like Dylan and Melanie, are holdouts—and some of those holdouts are constructing a vast molecular collection in hopes that a future person may be alive to make a new Earth. Foolhardy? Misguided? Quixotic? Probably. But what can a human (or a robot) do?
Mary Helen Specht is the author of Mudlark and Migratory Animals, a New York Times Editors’ Choice and winner of the Texas Institute of Letters Best First Fiction Award and the Writers’ League of Texas Fiction Prize. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Prairie Schooner, and other publications. A Fulbright Scholar to Nigeria and Dobie-Paisano Writing Fellow, she teaches creative writing at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.
Deb Olin Unferth is the author of seven books, including the novels Barn 8 and Earth 7, and the story collection Wait Till You See Me Dance. Her work has appeared in Harper’s, The Paris Review, Granta, and The New York Times Magazine. She teaches at the University of Texas at Austin and directs the Pen City Writers program in south Texas.

In The Vanishings, Kavi Yaga brings together eight stories set in contemporary South India, exploring absence in its many forms: people who disappear, relationships that fade, memories that linger, and the quiet ways lives are reshaped over time. Moving between intimate family histories and broader social realities, the collection reflects on identity, migration, gender, and belonging in an increasingly interconnected world.
Yaga joins author Sanderia Faye for a conversation about her debut fiction collection, as well as her approach to the short story form and the ways place, language, and memory shape her writing. Faye is the award-winning author of Mourner’s Bench, a professor at Southern Methodist University, co-founder of the Kimbilio Center for Fiction, and co-director of PEN America Dallas.
Kavi Yaga is a writer based in Hyderabad, India. Her debut short story collection, The Vanishings: Eight Stories (Texas Review Press), was selected by Kaveh Akbar as the winner of the George Garrett Fiction Prize. She is also the author of the travel memoir Walking in Clouds and co-editor of Work, Wisdom, Legacy: 31 Essays from India. A 2023 Yaddo Fellow and runner-up for the Calvino Prize for Speculative Fiction, her stories and essays have appeared in One Story, The Hindu, Swamp Pink, River Teeth, and other publications. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a software engineer in Chicago and as a development economics researcher in South India, experiences that continue to inform her fiction.

Seguimos con Así en el cielo como en la tierra, de Ana María Paula. Una novela que explora los vínculos familiares, la memoria y las relaciones que nos forman, a través de una historia en la que el pasado y el presente se entrelazan y donde las decisiones, los afectos y las ausencias continúan resonando a lo largo del tiempo.
El club se reunirá una vez al mes y estará coordinado por Gabriel Calbosa. Nuestra intención es que cada encuentro cuente con alguna participación especial, ya sea de la autora o autor del libro o a través de mensajes dirigidos a los miembros del club.

About the poets:
francine j. harris is a 2025 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow and author of three poetry collections. Her third collection, Here is the Sweet Hand, won the National Book Critics Circle Award. She is Professor of English at University of Houston and Consulting Faculty Editor at Gulf Coast.
Adam Clay is the author of five books of poetry, including Circle Back (Milkweed Editions, 2024). His poems have appeared in Ploughshares, Mid-American Review, A Public Space, Ninth Letter, TriQuarterly, Denver Quarterly, Tin House, Bennington Review, Black Warrior Review, Georgia Review, Boston Review, Iowa Review, and elsewhere. He received a Literary Arts Fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission in 2018. For twenty years, he co-edited Typo Magazine, a journal of poetry and poetics. He is an Associate Professor and Director of Creative Writing at Louisiana State University.
A native New Orleanian, Karisma Price is an assistant professor of English at Tulane University. A poet and screenwriter, she is the author of I’m Always So Serious (Sarabande Books, 2023) which was a New York Times Editors’ Choice Pick. Her work has appeared in publications including Poetry, Indiana Review, Academy of American Poets Poem-A-Day Series, and elsewhere. Her honors include a 2026 Writing Freedom Fellowship from Haymarket Books and The Mellon Foundation, a 2025 Whiting Award in Poetry, a Cave Canem Fellowship, and the 2023 Stanley Kunitz Memorial Prize from the American Poetry Review. She holds an MFA in poetry from New York University.
Greg Brownderville is the author of three books of poetry, the editor-in-chief of Southwest Review, and a professor of English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He is also the creator of an online narrative series called Fire Bones.
