What better way to end Thanksgiving weekend while paving the road for the Holidays?!
Mars Williams is The Psychedelic Furs saxophonist. He was in The Waitresses, in the Grammy-nominated eight-piece “acid jazz” band Liquid Soul, and he has performed with Ministry and Billy Idol as well. Parallel to these endeavors he is a leading performer in the Chicago robust avant-garde and free jazz scene.
Along with Ken Vandermark, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and other Windy City luminaires, Williams started the Albert Ayler tribute band Witches & Devils, which quickly became an excuse to get together and perform an annual Chicago holiday concert. On these joyful dates, Christmas music started threading into the jazz. 2017 saw the first release of Mars Williams Presents: An Ayler Xmas. In November 2021, the fifth record is coming out. During these years, Mars traveled the Ayler Xmas out of Chicago to New York, Poland, and Texas with different groups in each destination.
The Texas band includes brothers Stefan and Aaron Gonzalez, trombonist Gaika James, and Jonathan Horne on guitar.
“For these memorable concerts, Williams merges a variety of Christmas songs with the indelible repertoire of free-jazz titan Ayler, who brought a scalding intensity to tunes rooted in gospel and spirituals. It may sound silly, but the performances are no joke, and they produce a seriously joyful noise. The band tackles warhorses like “O Tannenbaum” and “12 Days of Christmas” in the same smoldering fashion as their take on Ayler: the rhythm section bubbles and generates a kind of levitating intensity during the wonderfully expressive, multilinear theme statements, while the horns state familiar melodies in loose cries and the embellished lines of each player pull apart and coalesce in a naturalistic frenzy.”
