Let's Talk

Event Details

Produced by Make Art with Purpose (MAP) and edited by Janeil Engelstad, Let’s Talk is an intermittent zine that gives space to writing, art and stories by diverse voices. In a time of increasing tribalism and division, MAP aims to provide a place where people are empowered to voice their stories and to increase knowledge, understanding and empathy across cultures. The second issue of Let’s Talk is a comic book that features MAP’s affiliate project Break Bread, Bread Borders.

Originated by Dallas artist Jin-Ya Huang, Break Bread, Break Borders creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants in the greater DFW area. At pop-up dinners and catering events women recently arrived to the US share their traditional food. Each event includes time and space for conversations and the sharing of recipes and information about the cook’s cultural heritage. As a partner of Break Bread, Break Borders, MAP creates and produces actions and events that expand the reach of the project. The zine features the immigration stories and recipes of San San Naung (Myanmar), Maryam Alhaw (Syria), and Mariam Alshiblaq (Syria). Illustrated by acclaimed graphic novelist Tessa Hulls, Let’s Talk includes essays that provide political and social context to the women’s stories.

Let’s Talk is published by MAP. Issue #2 Break Bread, Break Borders
The event includes food prepared by and discussion with zine participants.
