Goodnight Moon!

Event Details

On the occasion of St. Patrick’s Day and celebrating all things green, we will read from that most famous great green room in all of kid lit: Goodnight Moon! We will also have other books on hand from the author Margaret Wise Brown, who had quite an interesting career: at the pioneering Bank Street School, as the first editor at W. R. Scott children’s books publishers, and as a prolific author.

She discovered a young Clement Hurd, the book’s illustator, freshly back from Paris where he studied painting with the renowned avant garde artist Fernand Leger (both left for America in 1933 in light of the changing political climate in Europe, as did many other artists and writers; subsequently both spent time in Yale’s architecture department).

We will look at some of Leger’s paintings, a photograph of the real room that inspired the book, as well as Hurd’s illustrations for Gertrude Stein’s only children’s book, the beautiful The World is Round, also the brainchild of Margaret Wise Brown.

Finally, we will look at 1983’s The Goodnight Moon Room: A Pop-Up Book, a rare out-of-print book for which he made new artwork nearly forty years after the 1947 original and just a few years before his passing.

Lanie DeLay has worked at Dallas Contemporary, the Dallas Public Library, Hamon Arts Library at SMU, at area preschools and the School For The Blind in Austin. She has written for Glasstire and Art&Seek, and she tutors children in early reading skills at Dealey Montessori. When she isn’t looking at art or reading with kids, she’s reading about art or looking for a new read.

It’ll be a 45 minute read followed by a short discussion with the kids–that’s going to be interesting, we can’t wait to see what they come up with.

All ages are welcome.

On Saturday morning bring your kids and infuse them with a love for reading.
