Further Sounds

Event Details

Further Sounds comes back to celebrate those explorers that wander beyond the edges of melody. In case you didn’t know by now, Dallas has a very active and rich –yet not always visible enough– experimental scene; we’ve invited some of its most talented artists to showcase what’s going on in the local outskirts of sound. Don’t miss the opportunity to be dazzled by the raw beauty of Sarah Ruth and the outer flowing explorations of Black Taffy and Black Doll.

Sarah Ruth Alexander is a University of North Texas graduate where she focused on vocal studies and electroacoustic composition. She has also studied with Meredith Monk and members of her vocal ensemble. She enjoys varied collaborations and has worked as an accompanist for a modern dance class and as a composer for a photography installation by Susan Kae Grant. She currently teaches voice, beginning piano, and performs solo with They Say the Wind Made Them Crazy and Violent Squid. She is also a frequent collaborator with Lily Taylor and various improvisational ensembles. Recently, one of Ms. Alexander’s electroacoustic compositions was chosen for a performance celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia at the University of North Texas. Her solo album, Words on the Wind was released April 2015 on Pour le Corps Records. Her album with They Say the Wind Made Them Crazy was released Summer 2016.

Black Taffy (Donovan Jones) is a Dallas based composer and performer whose focus lies in blending ambient music with bass heavy beats. Sometimes performing with a vibraphone and cassette decks, he frequently employs the use of cassette tape loops and other antiquated mediums to create pillowy worlds full of wow and flutter. He recently live scored a modern dance performance with Dallas based Danielle Georgiou Dance Group (DGDG) and is currently collaborating and performing with many other talented local artists such as Lily Taylor, Sudie and Francine Thirteen. Donovan also spent the past 8 years composing and performing with the instrumental band This Will Destroy You.

Black Doll is Faith Malimba, a Dallas based interdisciplinary creative. She studied fine art and photographic processes at both Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, NY. Her scholarly and inter/intrapersonal research explores identity, simulacrum and the impermanence of images/ego/self. She expresses her findings in varied ways including asemic and sound poetry, photography, and the queered sonic stylings she has labeled Other Pop.
