Event Details

An evening of instantaneous composition and extemporized soundscapes. Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Dan Clucas is on tour, for the Dallas concert he will be joined by North Texas stalwart improvisers, Sarah Ruth Alexander and Monte Espina, for a first time quartet. Fort Worth-based Kavin Alleson will open the night as Breaking Light, his expansive guitar solo project.

Dan Clucas has been active as a cornetist and composer in the improvised and new music communities of Los Angeles for over thirty-five years. As a committed improvising musician, he draws upon the languages and traditions of jazz and modern compositional practice in honing a unique vocabulary on the cornet. In addition to continually seeking out new musical situations with ad hoc improvising ensembles, he has performed with many musical luminaries both at home and abroad, including Richard Wood, Bonnie Barnett, Vinny Golia, Steuart Liebig, Nels Cline, Alex Cline, Rich West, Michael Vlatkovich, Rich Halley, Matt Crane, Damon Smith, Jeb Bishop, Tim DuRoche, Karl Evangelista, Phillip Greenlief, Henry Grimes, Joe Baiza, Weba Garretson, Mark Weaver, Lynn Johnston, Tom Varner, and Bobby Previte.

Sarah Ruth Alexander is a diverse musician and artist – a multi-instrumentalist, she employs hammered dulcimer, harmonium, electroacoustic sound art, and extended vocal techniques. She performs frequently both solo and with multiple bands and improvisational ensembles in the North Texas area. She’s a member of Bitches Set Traps, a feminist improvisational trio, also a recurring performer with the contemporary music ensemble Sounds Modern. Her solo tapes, Words On The Wind and The Shape of Blood To Come are among the finest North Texas releases in the last few years. In 2021, a duo work with double-bassist Damon Smith, God Made My Soul An Ornament was released by Balance Point Acoustics.

Monte Espina is the electroacoustic free improvisation duo of Ernesto Montiel and Miguel Espinel, both Venezuelan-born and North Texas-based.  They explore the possibilities of sinuous sonic environments amid amplified sounds and signal processing, and have been playing together for almost seven years. As a duo they have collaborated with a long list of local and regional artists, including Liz Tonne, Louise Fristensky, Tom Carter, Jason Kahn, A.F. Jones, Rebecca Novak, Aaron Gonzalez, and Justin Lemons.  Their recordings have been published by Marginal Frequency, Elevator Bath, and Round Bale Recordings. A year-long/site-specific project in collaboration with Sarah Ruth, cuatro estaciones, was released by Full Spectrum Recordings in October 2022. A new release is in the works with the Canadian label, presses précaires.

Solo project of Kavin Allenson, who experiments with improvised electric guitar, multi-stage delays, looping, ebow and various electronics. Call it “guitars looped, stretched and delayed”, kind of chill psych-ambient with some blues and jazz guitar lines thrown in. Breaking Light was nominated in 2011 for the FW Weekly Music Awards in the Guitarist category, and has played locally at Shipping and Receiving, Lola’s,Hip Pocket Theatre, among others.
