The Wild Detectives Ideas and Princeton University Press present Ancient Wisdom for Modern Readers, a conversation series that brings the practical ideas of classical thinkers into lively, accessible dialogue with modern life. Across three evenings, the scholars responsible for new editions in the series will discuss how ancient texts can help us think through urgent contemporary questions.
Explore the Ancient Wisdom for Modern Readers series at Princeton University Press.
What does it take to speak candidly when honesty carries real consequences? And how should leaders respond when people tell them what they do not want to hear?
For the opening conversation, classicist Michael Fontaine discusses How to Speak Freely: An Ancient Guide to Free Speech and Dissent, for which he selected, translated, and introduced Plato’s Apology, together with Lucian’s satirical The Gods in Council.
In Plato’s account, Socrates defends his duty to question authority, think independently, and speak according to conscience—even at the cost of his life. Lucian turns the question around, asking whether leaders who praise candor can tolerate it when speech becomes uncomfortable. Fontaine will bring these ancient arguments into conversation with today’s debates about free inquiry, dissent, institutional authority, and the risks of speaking one’s mind.
Michael Fontaine is Professor of Classics at Cornell University and director of Cornell’s Program on Freedom and Free Societies. He is the selector, translator, and author of the introduction to How to Speak Freely, and has written, edited, or translated several books in Princeton’s Ancient Wisdom for Modern Readers series.
December 14: Maria Heim, translator and author of the introduction to How to Truly Love, brings the Buddhist thinker Buddhaghosa into a contemporary conversation about love and relationships.
February 16: Mallory Monaco Caterine, translator and author of the introduction to How to Lead When Men Fail, considers Plutarch’s lessons on women, power, and leadership.

Join John Bradley and The Wild Detectives Book Club for our 110th selection: You Glow in the Dark by Liliana Colanzi, translated from Spanish by Chris Andrews.
Across seven stories, Colanzi brings together science fiction, horror, and the landscapes of Latin America. Environmental destruction, human ambition, and unsettling visions of the future blur the boundary between the familiar and the strange.
Come ready to share what stayed with you, what surprised you, and where these stories took you. Copies are available in the bookstore and through our online store.

Join us for a conversation with Karen Olsson about her new novel, Dear Thorns, with Dallas writer Sonia Smith.
In the South Texas ranchlands, wildlife researcher Lora spends her days tracking the elusive ocelot. An affair with a younger intern disrupts her carefully ordered life, while competing ambitions at the refuge test her dedication to conservation.
With humor and a keen eye for the landscape, Dear Thorns explores midlife desire, the distance between ideals and institutions, and the ways people and animals struggle to find room in a changing world.
Karen Olsson is the author of Dear Thorns, Waterloo, All the Houses, and The Weil Conjectures. Her debut novel, Waterloo, was a runner-up for the PEN/Hemingway Award. A former editor of The Texas Observer, she has contributed to The New York Times Magazine, Slate, Bookforum, and Texas Monthly. She studied mathematics at Harvard and lives in Austin with her family.
Sonia Smith is a Dallas-based writer and two-time Livingston Award finalist whose reporting has appeared in Texas Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, Slate, and the Kyiv Post. Her profile of climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe was selected for The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2017.
