A very promising evening of drums and guitar duos!

Will Guthrie is a France-based Australian percussionist with a shapeshifting approach to his instrument(s), who has carved a very unique path across different fields of global adventurous music. Guthrie is making a stop at the shop on his first US tour in a decade and will be joined by Dallas’ unique guitarist Gregg Prickett (Unconscious Collective, Trio du Sang, Ronald Shannon Jackson Decoding Society, etc…). Sharing the evening will be legendary Gerard Bendiks, the true polyrhythms master of DFW, along with the also legendary Kenny Withrow (Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Everlast, Tidbits, among many other music acts).

Will Guthrie plays solo using different combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics, and leads the contemporary hybrid percussion / gamelan group ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH. His music has been released on labels such as Black Truffle, Editions Mego, Erstwhile, Clean Feed, among many others. In the crowded world of free jazz/improv percussion, Guthrie’s work is distinguished from the delicately pointillist approach of much European improvisation by its rhythmic sophistication, unashamed virtuosity and undeniable physicality, touching on aspects of world musics from Javanese gamelan to South Indian Carnatic music.

Gregg Prickett is one of the most consistently creative guitarists in North Texas. A Dallas native, he has played with jazz combos, rock and country groups of all kinds throughout the area. Leader of the Monks of Saturnalia, a jazz group playing a cutting-edge style that took influence from post-bop, free jazz, rock, and a lush, Mingus-inspired sense of harmony. He was a member of Unconscious Collective, a jazz-rock crossover incorporating aspects of psychedelia, experimentation, free improvisation, body art, theater and ritual. In addition he delved into the outer sonic reaches with metroplex luminary Sarah Ruth Alexander in They Say The Wind Made Them Crazy, and he was also a member of the last line-up of Ronald Shannon Jackson’s pioneering jazz/funk/punk crossover group The Decoding Society.

Gerard Bendiks has lived and performed music in DFW for decades. He is also a drum set teacher, art photographer, composer, and band leader. Before arriving in Dallas he studied music at the Institute of Artistic Perceptions with Alan Silva’s Celestial Communications  Youth Orchestra in Paris, France. He continued his music education at TCU and UNT. He’s performed/performs etc with Swirve, the Magga Orchestra (and 4tet), Isopod, Dennis Gonzalez, Linny Nance, John Lewis, Jimi Towry, Prince Lasha, John Purcell, the Hazy Days DJ crew, and a long list of others.

Kenny Withrow, the guitarist/songwriter of legendary band, Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians, has carved out an impressively diverse music career path which began in the early 1980s. Withrow has worked with musical acts Everlast, Electromagnetics, TidbiTs, Forgotten Space, Fever in the Funkhouse, and Hell TX.  Kenny has spent years exploring different styles of music, playing in a variety of projects. His commitment to improvisation readiness reflects in his ever-evolving style. While studying at the Booker T. Washington School High School for The Performing and Visual Arts, Withrow absorbed the principals of embracing art and music without judgment, which greatly contributed to the unique sound and writing approach with Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians. Besides his musical pursuits, Kenny has dedicated himself to music education with music nonprofits, including  over 10 years of guitar instruction.
