Event Details

We are delighted to announce Maria Valencia, a saxophonist and clarinetist from Colombia, who you may have caught last year in our backyard with Meridian Brothers, a group where she is a core member. Her work moves across many different areas of music and she is also a hell of an improviser. On this occasion, she’ll join forces with Aaron Gonzalez and Stefan Gonzalez, Dallas’ own seasoned and spicy free jazz siblings. This is going to be a historic meeting!

Maria is coming fresh from a short US tour with Meridian Brothers, preceded by several sets during the 15-year anniversary celebrations of Matik Matik, the legendary Bogota venue, the place she calls home and where her work has been related to record production, live performing and artistic creation, both independent and in other groups such as El Sexteto la Constelación de Colombia, Asdrúbal, Palanca, MULA, La Resbalosa, Mirlitorrinco, Vien-Tox, Tortuga Alada and Curruncho.

She has developed her exploration as a composer and improviser and she has performed in national and international festivals. She also has received several awards, from institutions such as the Colombian Ministry of Culture, IDARTES, UNESCO, Universidad del Rosario and IBERMUSICAS.
Currently, in addition to her work as a performer and composer,  she teaches at the Universidad del Rosario Bogotá. She also has been Artist in Residence at Périscope Lyon (Fr) 2020 and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Ca) 2022.

Aaron Gonzalez plays all kinds of basses. He is a composer, a music teacher, and a performance artist. Elder son of Dennis Gonzalez and older brother of Stefan. Together, the three of them, they were Yeels At Eels (beautiful melodies, explosive rhythm fluxes and bursts of dynamics that borders and passes through countless possibilities in contemporary jazz), with just Stefan they are both Akkolyte (an intense experimental grindcore duo), also with Stefan but adding the extraordinary portuguese guitarist Luis Lopes and saxophonist Rodrigo Amado they have been Humanization Qtet.

Stefan Gonzalez is a drummer, percussionist, and vocalist from Dallas, TX. They are most known for his work with his family bands Yells at Eels (with brother Aaron Gonzalez and father Dennis Gonzalez) and Akkolyte (with brother Aaron). Stefan also performs regularly in Europe with Ingebrigt Haker Flaten’s super group The Young Mothers featuring Texas-based musicians Jonathan Horne, Jawwaad Taylor, Jason Jackson, and Amsterdam-based drummer Frank Rosaly. They perform solo under the moniker Orgullo Primitivo.
