Event Details

Double-bassist Damon Smith and violinist Alex Cunningham are on the road from St. Louis on tour along with Austin percussionist Lisa Cameron; in selected places, they will be joined by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Ruth. With the exception of Alex, all of them have performed at The Wild Detectives in different iterations that have included Ra Kalaam Bob Moses, Jaap Blonk, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, Thor & Friends, Tom Carter, Aaron and Stefan Gonzalez, Bitches Set Traps, and more. We are stoked to host this virtuosic improvisers quartet, who will also form first-time duos.

Damon Smith is a world-traveling bassist and relentless collaborator who studied double bass with Lisle Ellis and has had lessons with Joëlle Leandré, John Lindberg, Mark Dresser, and others. Damon’s explorations into the sonic palette of the double bass have resulted in a personal, flexible improvisational language based on the American jazz avant-garde movement and European non-idiomatic free improvisation. His list of collaborations extends way beyond the horizon, to name a few: Peter Kowald, Joëlle Léandre, Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Van Hove, Joe McPhee, Alvin Fielder, Henry Kaiser, and so many others.

Alex Cunningham is a violinist, improviser, and visual artist based in St. Louis, MO. His recorded output spans free improvisation, drone, noise, and minimalist composition. Cunningham has recorded with Claire Rousay, Thom Nguyen, Patrick Shiroishi, and Weasel Walter. Past collaborations include the groups Vernacular String Trio, Hess/Cunningham Duo, and Hardbody. Cunningham has released music on Close/Far Recordings, Personal Archives, Already Dead Tapes and Records, Fort Evil Fruit, Working Man Lay Down, Orb Tapes, and Astral Spirits.

Lisa Cameron uses amplified/acoustic percussion and strings, she locates resonant frequencies in space to create oscillating overtones, which are then employed as sound sources for live improvisation. She also plays drums and percussion. She has improvised live with Jandek, Eugene Chadbourne, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, Faust, Ernesto Diaz-Infante, Claire Rousay, Tom Carter, Sandy Ewen, Thor Harris, Jonathan Horne, Rat Bastard, and others.

Sarah Ruth is a diverse musician and artist – a multi-instrumentalist, she employs hammered dulcimer, harmonium, electroacoustic sound art, and extended vocal techniques. She performs frequently both solo and with multiple bands and improvisational ensembles in the North Texas area.
