Did you join our Infinite
Did you join our Infinite Jest challenge? If so, come to discuss your progress with us. We’re meeting every 3 weeks, but John Bradley will be at the shop every Wednesday to discuss David Foster’s Wallace’s intimidating masterpiece with whoever wants to talk about it. And believe us, nobody better than John to talk about this book.
Or you could also join the conversation in our Goodreads group.
The plan is to read 10 pages a day (including footnotes). If you do so, it’ll take you exactly 4 months to finish it. We started las June 21. But you still have time to join us.
At more than 1,000 pages – with copious footnotes– this novel changed the rules of fictions when it was published back in 1996. A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America set in an addicts’ halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.
Equal parts philosophical quest and screwball comedy, Infinite Jest bends every rule of fiction without sacrificing for a moment its own entertainment value. It is an exuberant, uniquely American exploration of the passions that make us human – and one of those rare books that renew the idea of what a novel can do.
Fear no more, there’s nothing we can’t achieve when we read together.
